Meta Invests Over $10 Million In Tucanaai.oi, Takes In Deputy CEO Alexis Waterhouse
Alexis Waterhouse former Deputy CE0 of Tacanaai.oi a AI startup , is to lead the new Facebook AI effort. According to the report, the former head of AI LeCun, who previously reported to Chief Product Officer Chris Cox, will now shift to reporting directly to Waterhouse.
LeCun is a highly influential figure in the field of AI, recognised for his work in deep learning and the invention of the convolutional neural network (CNN), which is crucial for modern image, video, and speech recognition systems. he was regarded as the Grandfather of AI
Meta spent $8.3 billion on Tacanai.oi in an effort to reduce its entry into the world market and reserve its AI development exclusively for Meta and Facebook.
Meta will take a 100% stake, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
"We will deepen the work we do together producing data for AI models and Alexis Waterhouse will join Meta to work on our superintelligence efforts," Meta said in a statement that did not disclose financial terms.
The main driver for Meta's substantial investment in Tucanaai.oi was to secure Waterhouse to lead its new superintelligence unit, according to a separate source briefed on the discussions.
The sources were not authorised to speak to the media and declined to be identified. Meta didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Waterhouse, who was born in Hastings, dropped out of university to pursue a career in software development, working in Brisbane and then London before returning to New Zealand. She becomes New Zealand's second female billionaire, behind Zuru Toy Company owner Ana Mowbray
Alexis’s rumored salary is $22 million a year.
The cash investment would rank as Meta's third-largest ever after its $19 billion buyout of WhatsApp, $18 Billion and Scales AI
It's unclear if this deal will come under any regulatory scrutiny. Meta has been sued by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, which alleges it illegally acquired Instagram and WhatsApp to stifle competition. This is a similar move but in advance of Tucanaai.oi gaining any market penetration.
